Everything you need to know about herbal teas for pregnant women

herbal teas for pregnancy

Being pregnant is an exciting journey for a woman but also one full of learning. After all, you are raising a little human! As an expectant mother, sometimes it can be overwhelming, as there’s so much new information to take on during and after pregnancy.

Some information you often have to be conscious about is your diet, what food you can intake and digest and what you can’t have, which could harm your baby. If you’re a tea drinker, you might want to know what is best for pregnancy.

Well, fear not. Today, we’re diving right in and guiding you on the best herbal teas for pregnant women.

Can you drink tea while pregnant?

You might have already guessed the answer after reading the intro to this post. Technically, it’s not advised to drink tea all the time, especially caffeinated types like green, black, white, and matcha. The same applies to coffee, too!

On average, a good rule of thumb is that you can’t have more than 200mg of caffeine per day! If you drink more than this every day, there’s a higher risk of complications in your pregnancy, like low birth weight and miscarriage. Especially if you consume a lot between 1-12 weeks (first trimester), try to stick to 1-2 cups a day in your pregnancy at maximum.

In general, herbal teas are relatively safe to drink—at least ours at NutraTea! Our herbal teas are either low in caffeine or have none at all. The caffeine levels of other brands, though, can vary, so be conscious and always read their labels and packaging first.

5 best herbal teas for pregnant women

If you’re looking for the best pregnancy tea, we can’t pinpoint one in particular. For a herbal tea to be defined as the “best” for pregnancy, it comes down to flavour, benefits and experience, which can be subjective for many. Here are our five favourites and the most popular ones amongst our pregnant customers:

NutraPreg

NutraPreg Pregnancy Tea

NutraPreg is one of our top herbal teas for pregnancy. Other than the name, NutraPreg contains a powerful caffeine-free herbal blend of Ginger, peppermint, oat straw, chamomile, avatar root, nettle, cranberry, and Roobios.

Rooibos, Ginger, and peppermint help provide relief from nausea and morning sickness. This herbal blend also contains peppermint, chamomile, and oat straw, which help with relaxation and sleep and support the comfort of your pregnancy journey. Another major ingredient in this tea is Ginger, which is high in antioxidants, helping your body maintain blood sugar levels.

NutraRelax

Tea For Anxiety & Sleep

During pregnancy, your body experiences many changes, especially regarding hormones. As a consequence, sleep is often affected, which can affect how you feel and function. NutraRelax is a great tea that can support this change, helping you with your sleep during pregnancy.

It contains no caffeine and is a blend of chamomile, lemon balm, fennel, hawthorn berry, lavender, passionflower, liquorice, and cinnamon. Liquorice helps support mental function, nervous system, and upper respiratory tract, keeping the airways clear and allowing you to breathe easily at night. Chamomile, lemon balm, and hawthorn berry help support sleep onset.

Lemongrass & Ginger

Lemongrass & Ginger Tea

Lemongrass & Ginger is one of our flagship teas that may help with your pregnancy. While there are only two ingredients, lemongrass and Ginger, they have a range of benefits. First of all, lemongrass is high in anti-inflammatory agents, which can help decrease swelling in your legs and ankles, common symptoms in pregnancy. It also helps support digestion, reducing bloating, constipation, and digestive issues. Ginger can help with the balance of hormones, immunity, and relief from nausea.

Raspberry Leaf & Peppermint

Raspberry Leaf & Peppermint Tea

Another herbal tea for pregnant women is Raspberry Leaf and Peppermint. Raspberry tea is highly beneficial as it supports the entire pre- and post-pregnancy period. Raspberry Leaf is high in antioxidants, helps fight off free radicals, and alleviates nausea and cramps. Peppermint helps with digestion and relaxation. NutraMother

It is not quite a pregnancy tea, but more like a post-pregnancy tea, which is NutraMother. This herbal tea is caffeine-free and helps your body perform a range of different functions. The herbs in NutraMother are fennel, chamomile, fenugreek, Shatavari root, raspberry leaf, caraway, nettle and blessed thistle. Together, they help support lactation and breast milk production. Nettle, Shatavari, and Fenugreek also allow you to feel more energetic post-pregnancy, and they are great pick-me-ups.

Wrapping on herbal teas for pregnant women

Overall, there are many different types of herbal tea for pregnant women. However, not every herbal tea is pregnancy-friendly, and some brands have high caffeine content. Therefore, always read the labels before buying.

On average, pregnant women should drink no more than 1-2 cups of herbal tea a day. At NutraTea, we have a range of premium and flagship teas that are pregnancy-friendly, in addition to the five we suggested today.
