What Tea is Good for Migraines?

Herbs like willow bark, feverfew, chamomile, and peppermint may provide natural relief when you have a migraine. Discover what tea is good for migraines in our latest blog.

6 million people in the UK experience migraines – and the throbbing headache, nausea, and dizziness can sometimes last a day or more.

While it isn’t yet known what causes migraines, you may notice yours are linked to certain triggers, such as specific foods, hormonal shifts, or stress. For others, pinning down a trigger may be difficult, which makes avoiding these painful episodes even harder.

As with other types of headaches, migraines can feel worse if you are dehydrated, so keeping your fluid intake up is a must. However, since high levels of caffeine can be a migraine trigger for some people, you might want to avoid overdoing the coffee, black tea, or caffeinated fizzy drinks.

But if black tea isn’t the best choice, what tea is good for migraines instead? Well, the good news is that opting for a herbal tea blend could have benefits beyond just keeping you well-hydrated.

Some herbs act as natural painkillers and anti-inflammatories, so they may help to ease the symptoms of a migraine. We explore some of the most popular herbal teas for migraines in this blog post.

  1. Feverfew

Feverfew has been used as a natural remedy for migraines since the time of the ancient Greeks. A member of the daisy family, it acts as a natural painkiller and has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies suggest it is a safe option for migraine treatment and could lower the frequency of episodes.

  1. Willow Bark

Known as “nature’s aspirin”, willow bark tea is another natural treatment for migraines and headaches with a long history of use. It is a source of salicin, a compound that is similar to aspirin. As a result, it acts as a gentle painkiller and can reduce the frequency of migraines, especially when combined with feverfew.

  1. Peppermint

The National Headache Institute recommends peppermint tea for migraines because it can reduce pain and calm your mind, making it especially good if your migraines tend to be triggered by stress or anxiety. Peppermint also contains menthol, which is a natural pain reliever.

  1. Chamomile

Another great tea for stress-related migraine headaches is chamomile. As well as being naturally soothing for the nervous system, chamomile is anti-inflammatory and contains apigenin, a plant-based compound that supports sleep and muscle relaxation.

  1. Ginger

Sadly, migraines aren’t just characterised by a blinding headache. Many people will also experience nausea and possibly also vomiting. If this is the case for you, then ginger tea is a good choice. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever that also helps to soothe nausea.

NutraHead

Our own answer to what tea is good for migraines is NutraHead, a herbal tea blend that contains feverfew, willow bark, ginger, and chamomile, as well as other pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory herbs like cinnamon, lavender, and rhodiola.
