Finding yourself up late at night still feeling awake and wired? Get a better night with our list of teas to help you sleep.
—
Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep a night, but over a third of us don’t get enough, according to the Sleep Foundation.
This lack of sleep does more than just leave us feeling tired and grumpy. It can have long-lasting impacts on our health, leaving us more at risk of developing several chronic illnesses, including heart problems, depression, and obesity.
A regular bedtime, comfortable sleeping conditions, and getting enough daylight during the day can all help us sleep better. And if you struggle to wind down in the evenings, a relaxing cup of herbal tea might be just what you need.
Some herbs help us feel more relaxed and ready for bed. From chamomile to valerian, we’ve made a list of the best herbal teas to help you sleep.
1. Chamomile
One of the most popular herbal teas around, chamomile is known for its relaxing and calming nature. The chamomile tea is great for soothing anxious thoughts and acts as a mild sedative, leading to better sleep quality.
2. Lavender
You may be more familiar with lavender as an essential oil or pillow spray, but it is also one of our favourite teas to help you sleep. A natural sedative, lavender helps your mind and body relax in the evenings.
3. Passionflower
Like chamomile, passionflower contains a compound called apigenin, which promotes sleep and relaxation. This herbal tea is traditionally used to treat insomnia and other sleep issues.
4. Lemon Balm
Soothing lemon balm is a lovely tea to help you get to sleep at night. Used to calm anxiety and relieve stress, it is a particularly good option for restless sleepers or those who find it hard to shut off their thoughts at night.
5. Hawthorn Berry
Hawthorn berries are traditionally used as a heart tonic – and this refers to both the physical heart and the emotional one. These bright red fruits are said to reduce anxiety and stress, making them another great option for preventing sleepless nights.
6. Valerian Root
Last but very much not least, valerian root is a well-known herbal remedy for insomnia and other sleep disturbances. Often termed “nature’s Valium”, this calming herb has a sedative effect, soothing both mind and body and supporting healthy sleep.
