Clear your sinuses and breathe easily again with our list of the most effective herbal teas for sinus infections.
—
Blocked and inflamed sinuses are a real misery, leaving you feeling headachy and bunged up. Known as sinusitis, these painful and irritating symptoms typically follow a cold and can last a week or more.
Annoying though it is, sinusitis is rarely serious and will usually clear up on its own… eventually. This doesn’t mean you need to just put up with the symptoms, however. There are several home remedies that can help to relieve sinusitis and help to breathe more clearly.
Our favourite option is herbal tea, which has the added advantage of keeping your fluid intake up – important when you are congested to loosen mucous and replace water loss. Plus, it is always comforting to have a delicious mug of hot tea to enjoy when you are feeling under the weather.
Look out for herbs that help to clear your sinuses, fight infection, and relieve congestion. Some of the most effective herbal teas for sinus issues are listed here to get you started.
1. Eucalyptus
Refreshing eucalyptus tea is one of the most popular herbal teas for sinus infections and other forms of congestion. It contains cineole, a compound that has been found effective at clearing sinuses, reducing snot, and relieving the headache that often accompanies sinusitis.
You can find eucalyptus in our NutraThroat and NutraDefence teas.
2. Ginger
Ginger is always a great plant ally for cold and flu season, easing a sore throat, fighting pathogens, and boosting the immune system. It is great for sinus infections too, as it contains anti-inflammatory compounds that help to reduce swelling and pressure.
We use ginger in many of our tea blends. For sinusitis, look for it in NutraDefence, NutraHead, and NutraThroat.
3. Peppermint
Cooling peppermint is another great herbal tea for sinus infections. It contains menthol, which you will often find as an ingredient in over-the-counter decongestants because it leaves your sinuses feeling clearer and more open. Peppermint also has antimicrobial properties, so may help to fight off the pathogens causing your sinus infection.
Enjoy peppermint as an ingredient in our NutraHead, and NutraThroat herbal teas.
4. Thyme
Thyme is often recommended for coughs and sore throats, but it is also useful as a herbal tea to relieve blocked sinuses. As an expectorant, thyme helps to loosen mucous and clear it from your system, easing some of the pressure in your swollen sinuses. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties and helps to reduce inflammation.
Thyme is one of the main ingredients in our Mullein Leaf and Thyme tea.
5. Chamomile
Another herb that has many different uses is chamomile, which is a particularly good option if your sinusitis has you struggling to sleep. Studies suggest that it can help to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis, including in people who experience long-lasting or repeated sinus infections.
Find chamomile in our NutraRelax and NutraThroat blends.
