Natural Remedies for UTIs

Learn some of the ways to treat and prevent urinary tract infections at home with our list of natural remedies for UTIs.

Infections in the urinary tract are usually caused by bacteria, so you may think your only option is to take a course of antibiotics to clear the problem. However, antibiotics can cause their own issues, disrupting the body’s natural biome and affecting gut health.

There are definitely many times when you want to see a doctor about your UTI. Older people, pregnant women, children, and those who have recently been through surgery should seek medical advice if they have signs of a urinary tract infection, according to the NHS.

You should also see your doctor if your symptoms don’t show any signs of improving after two days, or if you repeatedly get UTIs.

However, there are also natural remedies for UTIs that you can try at home, including herbal treatments. We list some of these in this blog post. Many of these herbs can also be useful for preventing UTIs, which is especially good if you are prone to repeated infections.

It helps to drink more than you usually do when you have a UTI, so that you regularly empty your bladder during the day. Choosing to drink herbal tea for your UTI therefore has two benefits – first, you stay well-hydrated, and second, you get the benefits from the herbs in your chosen brew.

1. Uva Ursi

Also known as bearberry, uva ursi is a mild diuretic that can help to flush out your system when you have a UTI. It also has antimicrobial properties and contains arbutin, a natural antiseptic and painkiller.

2. Parsley

Another natural diuretic is parsley, which is also used as a herbal remedy for UTIs. It contains antibacterial compound that might help to fight off the bacteria that cause the infection, and has shown promise for alleviating the symptoms of urinary tract infections.

3. Juniper Berries

Perhaps more associated with gin-making, juniper berries are another natural remedy for UTIs. Like other herbs on this list, they have diuretic properties that help to flush bacteria out of your system. They are also antibacterial and antifungal, with a long history of use in treating bladder and kidney issues, as well as UTIs.

4. Goldenseal

For those who want to prevent re-infection, goldenseal is a great home UTI remedy to try. This herb contains a compound called berberine, which makes it harder for bacteria to stick to the walls of the urinary tract. Coupled with other herbs that have a diuretic effect, this can help your body get rid of the pathogens before they can cause an infection.

5. Vitamin C

OK, we know vitamin C isn’t a herb. However, we didn’t feel like a list of natural remedies for UTIs could be complete without mentioning it. Studies suggest that having higher levels of vitamin C in your system can protect you against recurring urinary tract infections. This may be partly why cranberry is such a popular home remedy for UTIs. It is also why we include acerola in our NutraFlow tea – this fruit contains high levels of vitamin C.
